The third and final wave of Social Security payments for September is set to go out this week under the regular payment schedule.

Social Security benefits, paid mostly to older or retired Americans, are typically issued on Wednesdays.

Social Security faces a shortfall as soon as 2032. If Congress takes no action, retirees could see a 28% cut in monthly benefits, research suggests. That has led several groups to propose ways to fix Social Security, including a Washington think tank that drew attention for a paper proposing capping annual benefits at $100,000 to shore up the retirement trust fund.

Here’s what you need to know about this week’s Social Security payments.

Beneficiaries born between the 21st and the last day of their birth month will receive their monthly Social Security benefit on Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to the SSA's payment calendar.
