Rams shut out Saints: Score, highlights as Stetson Bennett, Rams defense shine

NFL preseason action continued as the Los Angeles Rams beat the New Orleans Saints 34-0 at SoFi Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 22.

After rookie Ty Simpson impressed in his preseason debut last week in Kansas City, it was Stetson Bennett who re-asserted himself in the QB2 battle this week, throwing for 181 yards with no turnovers and rushing for two touchdowns in the first half. Simpson mostly just managed the clock in the second half, finishing 8-for-12 for 73 passing yards.

The Rams defense flew all over the field, forcing three takeaways — two of which came in the redzone and one of those a pick-six from Alex Cook — to keep their foothold on the Saints offense. Through two preseason games, LA has yet to allow a single touchdown.

USA TODAY Sports had live coverage with updates, highlights and analysis for Saturday’s Rams vs Saints game.

Saints vs. Rams highlights

7:03 pm ET August 22, 2026

Final: Rams 34, Saints 0

The Saints’ last hope at avoiding a shutout went wide right on Tanner Brown’s 39-yard field goal attempt. All Ty Simpson had to do was take a knee to close out the win, locking in the Rams defense’s second straight clean sheet of the preseason.

6:53 pm ET August 22, 2026

3:41 4th quarter: Rams 34, Saints 0

LA killed five minutes off the clock on a meticulous 11-play, 66-yard drive capped off by a 12-yard rushing touchdown from Jarquez Hunter. On 2nd and 10, Ty Simpson handed the ball off to Hunter, who cut left into the A gap and sidestepped his way into the second level and through the goal line.

Hunter has 68 rushing yards on 12 carries.

6:28 pm ET August 22, 2026

End of third quarter: Rams 27, Saints 0

LA didn’t have the ball much in the third, but a pair of timely redzone takeaways from the defense — one of them a pick-six at their own goal line — has strengthened their foothold on this game.

6:22 pm ET August 22, 2026

1:47 3rd quarter: Rams defense forces third Saints turnover of the game

Yet another Saints drive has been halted in the redzone. Wesley Bailey punched the ball out of running back Ty Chandler’s arms at the two-yard line and defensive lineman Payton Zdroik was right there for the recovery to keep the shutout going.

5:59 pm ET August 22, 2026

9:07 3rd quarter: Rams 27, Saints 0

Just when it looked like New Orleans was marching down the field in Spencer Rattler’s first drive of the game, the Rams take all the momentum back thanks to Alex Cook’s interception at the goal line that he ran back all the way down the field for a pick-six.

5:39 pm ET August 22, 2026

Halftime: Rams 20, Saints 0

LA got the ball one more time with a minute and a half left before the half and capitalized once more with a 10-play, 77-yard drive capped off by Mevis’ second field goal of the game. Stetson Bennett looked comfortable leading the offense and finishes the half 19-for-31 for 181 yards, no interceptions and two rushing touchdowns on two rushes for nine yards. Rookie Ty Simpson is expected to start the second half.

CJ Daniels was Bennett’s go-to target; he has eight receptions for 68 yards and is averaging 8.5 yards per catch. Jordan Waters and Jarquez Hunter have also been effective running the ball for a combined 77 yards on 13 total carries.

Defensively, Elias Neal has led the way with five solo tackles. Wesley Bailey has four tackles with a sack and two QB hits, and AZ Hamilton has the only takeaway of the game so far with a first quarter interception.

5:19 pm ET August 22, 2026

2:53 2nd quarter: Rams 17, Saints 0

Stetson Bennett picks up his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time on an eight-yard scramble in which he raced past the Saints defense to give the Rams a three-possession lead on what might’ve been his final series of the day.

4:54 pm ET August 22, 2026

10:22 2nd quarter: Rams 10, Saints 0

LA takes advantage of the turnover and marches right down the field for six points. On first and goal at the one-yard line, Stetson Bennett rolled to his right on a bootleg before eventually deciding to tuck in and run, extending the ball towards the pylon just before he was pushed out of bounds. Bennett was originally ruled short, but the call was overturned after a Rams challenge.

4:48 pm ET August 22, 2026

A.Z. Hamilton picks off Zach Wilson

The Rams offense is in business at midfield thanks to the first turnover of the game. Rookie cornerback A.Z. Hamilton slipped into press coverage and was in perfect position to jump right in front of Saints receiver Bub Means for the interception.

4:34 pm ET August 22, 2026

3:55 first quarter: Rams 3, Saints 0

An eight-yard run by Jordan Waters on the 10th play of the drive sets the Rams up for first and goal at the nine-yard line. A false start on Bill Murray backed them up five yards, however, and McVay settled for three points on a 26-yard field goal from Harrison Mevis to get on the board first.

4:28 pm ET August 22, 2026

Rams pick up fourth down conversion in first quarter

Stetson Bennett and Tyler Scott just barely missed on a deep ball that would’ve set the Rams up within five yards of the endzone, but it slipped just through Scott’s fingers. Bennett went back to him two plays later on 4th and 1, and this time Scott was able to hold on for a 16-yard gain as he dove onto the turf to keep LA’s drive alive and move the ball to the New Orleans 32-yard line.
