Pittsburgh pediatric doctor fatally stabbed and wife wounded in attack as they slept

A Pittsburgh pediatric doctor was killed and his wife was wounded when they were brutally stabbed while they slept in their bed, police said Thursday.

Police responded to a home in Edgewood on Thursday shortly after midnight and found Idris Evans, 46, and his wife with “multiple stab wounds,” Allegheny County police said.

Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

His wife was also taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition.

During a search, detectives found Elijah Hemingway, 32, behind a nearby home, with “lacerations to his hand,” police said. He was detained and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Court records show Hemingway is awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass and possessing instruments of crime.

At the hospital, Evans’ wife told authorities that she and her husband awoke to a man stabbing them with a kitchen knife.
