Wyndham Clark shot even par Sunday and won by three, which does not begin to describe what happened at Bellerive Country Club.

Clark closed with a 70 to finish 17 under and win the BMW Championship after leading wire to wire. He also started the final round 17 under, but had a five stroke lead. During four hours of gold on Sunday, he watched it slip away.

Rory McIlroy caught up to him at 14 under with six holes to play. Collin Morikawa eagled the 17th to get within a shot. Patrick Cantlay, who woke up 43rd in the FedEx Cup playoffs standings, climbed all the way to finish second, hopping over McIlroy on the final hole.

Clark went without a birdie until the 16th hole, then he finished with birdies on the last three holes to put the exclamation point on the win.

The top 30 golfers in the standings advance to next week’s finale, the Tour Championship. Three men played their way into next week’s field and three played their way out of it. Robert McIntyre shot 65, the round of the day, and moved from 36th to 25th. Gary Woodland closed with a 69 to finish 12 under and jumped from 31st to 18th. Patrick Cantlay made the biggest leap of all, going from 43rd to 19th with a second-place finish. Going the other way were Kurt Kitayama, who started the week 28th and finished 31st, Rickie Fowler, who came in 30th and left 33rd after a double bogey on his opening hole Sunday, and Bud Cauley, who slid from 29th to 34th.

The field was loaded with big names since only the top 50 golfers in the FedEx Cup points standings after last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship qualified for this event.

Why Scottie Scheffler considered withdrawing from the BMW Championship

The world’s No. 1 golfer revealed after Sunday’s round that he has been battling hand, foot and mouth disease all week. He got sick Monday night, just four days after winning the St. Jude Championship by eight shots. He said the blisters made it painful to grip a club to start the week. He shot 72 on Thursday, his worst opening round since the U.S. Open in June. He walked off the course hoarse that day and said only that he was sick. He has already locked up the No.1 spot in the FedEx Cup and the bonus that goes with it.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common viral infection that raises painful blisters, usually on the palms, soles of the feet and inside the mouth. Most cases are in children.

Wyndham Clark birdied the 17th. Rory McIlroy bogeyed it. The tournament was likely decided right there. Clark is 16 under with one hole to play and leads by two. Patrick Cantlay birdied the 18th hole and moved into second at 14 under. McIlroy is 13 under

Clark takes back the lead with two holes to play

Wyndham Clark got his first birdie of the day on the 16th hole to take back a one-shot lead at Bellerive. Rory McIlroy sits one back at 14-under.

Rory McIlroy has entered the chat

Watching everyone else jockey for position on the front nine, Rory McIlroy has caught fire and has moved into a tie for the tournament lead.

With a third birdie in four holes, McIlroy joied Wyndham Clark at 14 under through 11. The two will go head-to-head in the final group over the final seven holes, with Gary Woodland, Patrick Cantlay and Chris Gotterup all two strokes back.

Bogey on 10 drops Clark into a tie for lead

After missing only five greens in regulation over his entire round on Saturday, Wyndham Clark has missed five of his first 10 greens in this final round. The latest miss on No. 10, led to a missed par putt from just under nine feet to drop him back to 14 under for the tournament.

That means Clark’s five-shot lead to begin the day is gone. He’s tied with Patrick Cantlay through 10 holes.

Gary Woodland inexplicably tops tee shot on 9

Coming off a birdie to get him within one shot of the lead, Gary Woodland stepped to the tee on the par-4 ninth with a chance to tie for the lead. What happened next was completely unexpected.

Any weekend duffer knows the feeling of completely topping a ball off the tee. But rarely is a shot like that seen on the PGA Tour. Woodland just bashed his ball into the ground and into the creek that runs in front of the tee.

Woodland took a double bogey on the hole to drop from second place at 14 under to a tie for third at 12 under.

Robert MacIntyre the focal point of FedEx points bubble

With many of the golfers already finished with their rounds − and unable to affect their final points standings − all eyes are likely to be on Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre.

Making the turn onto the back nine, MacIntyre sits in 29th place in FedEx Cup points, just enough to be among the top 30 who qualify for the Tour Championship. If the left-hander can continue to be on the fringe of the top 10 in this tournament (he’s currently tied for 11th at 7 under), he’ll secure that bubble spot.

If MacIntyre should falter, Kurt Kitayama (who shot a 2-under 68 and finished at minus 4) is poised to claim the final spot.

Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay has surged up the standings after beginning the final round outside the top 30. At 13 under, he’s challenging for the tournament lead in addition to a playoff spot. He’s gone from a projected 43rd at the beginning of the tournament up to 22nd.

Gary Woodland off to hot start with three early birdies

Let’s not hand this tournament to Wyndham Clark just yet. After the third-round leader bogeyed his first hole, fellow American Gary Woodland began making an early charge.

A birdie at the par-4 second hole moved Woodland closer, and following back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5, Clark’s five-stroke advantage has quickly been cut to two.

Are low scores possible on Sunday?

It will take a huge round from someone close to the top of the leaderboard to supplant Wyndham Clark in today’s final round. However, there could be some shuffling in the FedEx Cup standings if someone is able to go low on Sunday.

It could happen.

The weather conditions at Bellerive Country Club outside St. Louis are close to perfect. And Jake Knapp has already given us a glimpse of what can be done. Knapp closed with four birdies in his final seven holes on his way to a 5-under 65. That’s the low round of the day so far.

Unfortunately for Knapp, his 6-over 76 on Saturday likely cost him his chance to make the Tour Championship. He’s projected to finish in 38th place in the standings.

Scottie Scheffler begins his round

He’s not going to make a run at a second consecutive win in the FedEx Cup playoffs, but World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is looking to maintain his momentum with a strong final round at the BMW Championship.

Scheffler began the day at 5 under for the tournament, 12 strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark. He’s paired with Cameron Young.

Presidents Cup berth also on the line for Wyndham Clark

Barring a major collapse in his final round at Bellerive, Wyndham Clark is poised to not only claim a spot in the Tour Championship, but also gain an automatic berth on the U.S. Presidents Cup team.

Clark began the week at No. 7 in the points standings, but is projected to leap to third. In doing so, he would bump Ben Griffin out of the top six. But there’s still a lot that can happen on Sunday in determining the six automatic qualifiers that will make up half of the 12-man U.S. squad captained by Brandt Snedeker.

 The 2026 Presidents Cup will be Sept. 22-27 in Chicago at Medinah Country Club’s Course No. 3. 

Outside, looking in: Kurt Kitayama, Bud Cauley

There’s still time for several golfers outside the top 30 in FedEx Cup points to play their way into the Tour Championship. But time is running out.

As of noon ET, Kurt Kitayama and Bud Cauley were just outside the cut line.

Kitayama is 2 under through seven holes in his final round, so he definitely has a shot to get in.

Cauley just bogeyed the 12th hole to drop back to even for the day.

Rickie Fowler is in 33rd place after making the turn in even par. Here’s how the players on the bubble stand in relation to where they were entering the BMW Championship.

There is a $20 million total purse at the 2026 BMW Championship, with the winner of the second FedEx Cup playoff event set to take home $3.6 million. Even the last-place finisher is guaranteed $66,000 with no cut and a 50-golfer field.
