Texas takes down Tennessee: No. 1 Longhorns survive late scare to pick up SEC road win

It wasn't exactly an offensive clinic, but No. 1 Texas hung on for a 20-17 victory over No. 14 Tennessee in Neyland Stadium on Saturday.

The Longhorns defense, which completely neutralized Josh Heupel's offense, and Colin Simmons had a field day against an overwhelmed Tennessee offensive line. Simmons got to Vols quarterback Faizon Brandon for five sacks, which tied a program single-game record.

Will Muschamp's defense made Brandon, an 18-year-old freshman, look his age on Saturday afternoon. Even when Brandon wasn't under duress, he was hesitant to pull the trigger and bailed on the pocket very quickly.

In total, Brandon was sacked 10 times, and the Longhorns totaled 12 tackles for loss. With the sacks factored in, the Vols averaged just 1.6 yards per attempt on the ground.

As a unit, the Texas defense limited the Tennessee offense to just 221 with a longest play of just 30 yards.

The Texas offense was far from perfect, but it did enough to win the game in a tough atmosphere. Arch Manning did throw an interception, but he completed 73.7% of his passes for 201 yards.

After allowing six sacks and 10 tackles for loss, the Longhorns have plenty to clean up…
