William Orbit, the British music producer who helped shape Madonna’s acclaimed “Ray of Light” album and worked with artists including Blur, All Saints and U2, has died. He was 69.
The Grammy-winning producer died at his home on July 23, according to a statement shared on his social media accounts by his family and friends Friday, Aug. 7. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“We are deeply saddened by his passing,” the statement read. “He will be greatly missed by us and by so many whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness.”
Orbit’s most celebrated collaboration came with Madonna on her 1998 album “Ray of Light.” Orbit co-produced much of the album and helped create the electronic sound behind songs including its title track, “Frozen” and “The Power of Good-Bye,” according to his biography shared on his website.
The project earned Orbit several Grammy nominations and wins. “Ray of Light” won best pop album and best dance recording at the 1999 Grammy Awards, with Orbit among other recipients. He later earned another Grammy for Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger,” which appeared on the soundtrack for the 1999 film “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.” Other musicians he worked with included Britney Spears and Will.i.am, with whom he collaborated in 2013 on the album “Britney Jean,” helping produce the song “Alien.” Orbit also worked with the British girl group All Saints on songs including “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee.” His lengthy list of collaborators also include Pink, Robbie Williams and Ricky Martin.
Orbit and Madonna continued working together following their success in the late ’90s. He contributed to her 2000 album “Music” and later reunited with the pop star for her 2012 album “MDNA.”
In March, Orbit shared that he and the “Material Girl” singer hadn’t spoken in many years, he revealed on Instagram. “I speak with many close to her, including fam, but have not had a single syllable back in over two decades,” he wrote. Orbit added that he had “absolute zero hard feeling” towards the singer. “Are you kidding, I will always love that woman. For real. She made my career.”
During his career, Orbit earned seven Grammy nominations and three wins.
His most recent solo album, “The Painter,” was released in 2022 and featured collaborations with artists including Beth Orton and and Katie Melua.
