To help readers compare lenders more confidently, USA TODAY developed a weighted scoring methodology that evaluates the factors most important to student borrowers.

Choosing a private student loan involves more than comparing interest rates. Loan costs, eligibility requirements, repayment flexibility and borrower protections can all have a significant impact on the total cost of borrowing and the overall customer experience.

To help readers compare lenders more confidently, USA TODAY developed a weighted scoring methodology that evaluates the factors most important to student borrowers. Our ratings emphasize affordability and long-term borrower value, while also considering loan availability, repayment flexibility and customer support.

Our ratings are based on independent research, publicly available information, customer review data and lender disclosures. Each student loan provider receives a composite score based on the following categories.

Category weight summary

Category Weight
Affordability 30%
Borrower protections 25%
Customer service 25%
Eligibility 20%
Total 100%

  • Consumer protection resources
  • Overall customer service experience
  • Trustpilot customer reviews

Eligibility (20%)

The best student loan providers are accessible to the widest range of borrowers and offer financing for multiple educational paths.

  • Membership requirements (if any)
  • Undergraduate loan availability
  • Graduate loan availability
  • Career training or vocational loan availability

Methodology note

Our student loan rankings evaluate lender affordability, eligibility requirements, borrower protections and customer experience. They do not evaluate approval likelihood for individual borrowers or guarantee that one lender is the best choice for every financial situation.

All information is gathered from lender websites, publicly available disclosures, customer review platforms and independent research, and is reviewed periodically for accuracy.

Our editors independently choose our recommendations. Some content is produced with paid support from a third party, however our editorial decisions remain independent. If you buy through our links, the USA TODAY Network may earn a commission. Prices and availability may change.
