Trump teases relief as gas prices rise. Here’s where drivers pay most

President Donald Trump promised relief for drivers is coming soon as gas prices have continued to rise since the United States and Israel launched joint military strikes against Iran.

The average price of a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. on Wednesday, Sept. 9 was $4.22, according to AAA. That's up from an average of $4.15 one week ago on Sept. 2 and $3.19 on Sept. 9, 2025, the group said.

Trump said Wednesday, Sept. 9 "right after the election, oil prices are going to be tumbling downward."

"I think it’s going to take a little bit longer than the midterm,” Trump said.

The comments come as Patrick De Haan, Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy, said in post on X "you can watch in real-time the national average price of gasoline continue to tick up… $4.234/gal right now."

De Haan said diesel gas prices in the U.S. are also on the rise.

"BREAKING: diesel history is about to be made. $6/gal nationally — never seen before, days away," he wrote. "It's now in the pipeline, unavoidable."
