President Donald Trump has characterized concerns about potentially dire consequences of unrestrained AI development as a “hoax.”

Calls to put some brakes on AI development are raising questions about whether a tech slowdown could rein in the momentum that has been powering U.S. economic growth.

\n\n

Once confined to remote corners of the technology world, concerns about AI safety burst into broader view last week after multiple AI safety engineers at leading companies resigned and issued public warnings that the technology isn’t being developed responsibly.

\n\n

Trump called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during an industry summit yesterday and gave another full-throated defense of artificial intelligence after Huang put the call on speakerphone.

\n\n

Trump characterized concerns about AI safety as a “hoax,” while telling Huang in the middle of the All-In Summit that the U.S. had to beat China in AI innovation and development.

\n\n

Several lawmakers will speak at a "Pro-Human Assembly" today in D.C. that aims to address concerns about the future of artificial intelligence.
