\n\nWhen a debt collector takes you to court over an unpaid balance, the financial consequences can extend well beyond what you actually owe. After all, a debt-related judgment can, and often does, open the door to more aggressive collection efforts, including attempts to take the money you owe directly from your bank account. And, if you're already struggling to keep up with your expenses, having those funds suddenly put at risk can make an already difficult financial situation even harder to manage.
\n\nThe stakes can be even higher, though, when some of the money in your bank account originated from a source outside of your job. Child support payments, for example, are typically used to help cover everything from housing and groceries to school and childcare costs. And, if those payments are deposited into the same account that a debt collector targets with a bank levy, questions can quickly arise about whether that money is treated differently from the rest of the balance.
