Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell spoke to the media for the first time since his mother’s tragic death.

“These last couple months have been pretty tough on me and my family, but we’re working through it. I really appreciate all the love and support and prayers that have been coming from all over the NFL community, all the fan bases and you guys as well. I appreciate the prayers,” Campbell told reporters on Tuesday, Aug. 18. “Continue praying for us because we need it.”

Campbell and his family endured unfathomable tragedy in June.

One of Campbell’s brothers, Ciarre, was arrested on multiple charges, including murder, after the family’s mother, Nateal, was found dead inside an Atlanta home on June 30 during a welfare check.

Ciarre was later booked on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, according to Fulton County (Georgia) Jail records.

The Ravens released a statement soon after the death of Nateal, 71.

“We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Calais Campbell‘s mother. We extend our deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time,” the Ravens statement read. “We ask that everyone please respect their privacy while they grieve from this heartbreaking loss.”

Calais is entering his 19th NFL season and second stint in Baltimore. The NFL veteran was originally drafted in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2008 NFL Draft. He’s been a part of five franchises (Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens, Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins) during his nearly two-decade career. The 39-year-old has been a steady contributor and a leader at all his stops.

“I love the game of football a lot. It brings me joy,” Calais said to reporters after addressing his mother’s death.
