Shirley MacLaine arrives for "The Choreography of Comedy: The Art of Eccentric Dance" on Aug. 5, 2019, in Beverly Hills.

Shirley MacLaine is looking back on one of her films that “didn’t do very well” in a rare video message.

The Southampton Playhouse in New York shared a video from the Hollywood icon on Instagram Aug. 17 ahead of an upcoming screening of her 1969 musical “Sweet Charity.”

In the video, MacLaine, 92, said she wishes she “could be with you” at the theater’s Aug. 25 screening, adding that she would “like to see” the movie again.

“While you’re watching it, remember how hard we worked,” she said. “And between you and me, it didn’t do very well! So, I hope you guys like it. Much love.”

MacLaine ended the video message by sending kisses to the camera. She played taxi dancer Charity in Bob Fosse’s 1969 directorial debut based on the stage musical.

The film also starred John McMartin, Chita Rivera, Paula Kelly and Sammy Davis Jr.

“Sweet Charity” was a box office disappointment upon release, and reviews at the time were also mixed, with The New York Times’ Vincent Canby calling it a “long, noisy and, finally, dim imitation of its source material.”

Still, MacLaine received a Golden Globe nomination for the role. Fosse followed the movie up with his acclaimed, Oscar-winning 1972 musical film “Cabaret,” starring Liza Minnelli.

The Southampton Playhouse’s Aug. 25 screening of “Sweet Charity” will include a Q&A with Shelby Coleman, the widow of the film’s composer Cy Coleman, according to the theater’s website.

MacLaine has received six Academy Award nominations throughout her career, including for her role in the 1960 classic “The Apartment.” She won the best actress Oscar in 1984 for “Terms of Endearment.”

Shirley MacLaine speaks onstage at the AARP The Magazine's Movies For Grownups Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel on Feb. 4, 2019, in Beverly Hills, California.

MacLaine was last seen onscreen in 2024 with a role in the film “American Dreamer,” which also starred Peter Dinklage. She also appeared in the second season of “Only Murders in the Building” in 2022.

In 2019, the “Steel Magnolias” actress told People magazine she had no plans of quitting acting. “I look back at the wonderful parts I’ve had the honor to play, and I’m thinking about the future, and I want to be a spokesperson for older women – probably because I’m one,” she said.

According to Variety, MacLaine is set to star opposite Ansel Elgort in the upcoming road trip comedy “Lucy Boomer.”
