FBI agents reportedly executed multiple search warrants against former California Rep. Eric Swalwell over the weekend as part of a federal investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, according to CBS News and other media outlets.

Swalwell was served the first warrant after he landed at the San Francisco Airport on Saturday, and his cell phone was seized. FBI agents followed up with an additional warrant on Sunday targeting his Washington, D.C residence, where agents seized additional evidence, according to CNN.

These seizures come months after FBI Director Kash Patel reportedly pushed for the release of files on a decade-old closed investigation regarding Swalwell and Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative.

Those records were declassified by President Donald Trump on Monday and detail two FBI interviews with Swalwell where he acknowledged that he had a physical relationship with Fang on several occasions in 2015.

Fang reportedly helped Swalwell raise funds for his 2014 reelection campaign and placed an intern in his congressional office. But Swalwell cut ties with Fang in 2015 after federal agents raised concerns about her to the representative. He assisted the agency with its investigation, and in 2023, the Republican-led House Ethics Committee closed its investigation into the congressman.

The congressman was never charged with a crime in relation to the investigation.

The FBI declined to comment on the federal investigation when USA TODAY reached out.

Swalwell ended his bid for California’s governorship and resigned from Congress in April after several women accused him of sexual assault and misconduct.
