2 dead, roughly 15 missing as flash flooding hits Grand Canyon: Updates

Devastating flooding at the Grand Canyon has left at least two people dead and more than a dozen others unaccounted for, according to the National Park Service.

Park officials said on Aug. 30 that more than 60 people had been evacuated and approximately 15 others may be missing after significant flash flooding swept through parts of the Grand Canyon.

Two bodies have been recovered as search and recovery efforts continue after flash flooding tore through the Grand Canyon, the NPS said Aug. 31. Initially, the body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon National Park said in a 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 update on the flooding.

Details about the second fatality were not immediately provided.

Park officials urged anyone who knows of hikers or backpackers who were in the inner canyon along the Bright Angel Creek corridor on Aug. 29, as well as anyone with a campground reservation in the affected area, to contact the agency's Investigative Services Branch.
