Iran War Updates: Tehran proposes 7-day plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz as it seeks deal before U.S. midterms

The European Union's energy chief said the Iran war is causing a "price crisis" for the EU, according to a letter seen by the Reuters news agency.

European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen urged EU countries to consider ways to limit energy demand in light of the war's impact on oil and gas markets, Reuters reported.

"We are facing a price crisis linking to a supply crisis," Jorgensen said in the letter to other EU energy ministers, adding: "I invite you to consider taking or continuing to take measures that can sustain (gas storage) injections or reduce gas and electricity demand for as long as necessary."

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said at the U.N. on Friday that further attacks on the Islamic holy city of Mecca would be a "red line" for Islamabad.

Pakistan maintains ties with Iran, which backs the Houthi fighters responsible for firing missiles at Saudi Arabia where Mecca is situated.

Last week, Riyadh accused the Houthis of targeting Mecca for the first time since 2017 with a drone that was downed, an accusation the Houthis strenuously denied.
