Ashton Jeanty injury update as Raiders RB leaves practice after awkward landing
The injury bug has found Ashton Jeanty.
With just three weeks before the regular season begins, Jeanty suffered an injury during the Las Vegas Raiders practice on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Jeanty was helped off the field by trainers and couldn’t put any weight on his right leg, according to ESPN’s Ryan McFadden. It came after he was diving for a catch and landed awkwardly.
Multiple reports added that the entire team took a moment to recognize the injury, saying a prayer for the second-year back.
The Raiders had been cautious, at least in game action, with Jeanty during the preseason. He logged just three carries in the preseason opener and didn’t play in the team’s second contest.
Here’s the latest on the running back:

Raiders RB depth chart
Jeanty is currently the top running back on Las Vegas’ depth chart among five options. Below is a full look at the team’s pecking order at the position, according to the Raiders’ unofficial depth chart.
- Ashton Jeanty
- Mike Washington Jr.
- Dylan Laube
- Roman Hemby
- Dare Ogunbowale
The Raiders also have two fullbacks on the roster, Connor Heyward and Patrick Gurd.
Who is Ashton Jeanty’s backup?
Mike Washington Jr. is currently listed as the backup to Ashton Jeanty. The Raiders selected the rookie in the fourth-round of the 2026 NFL Draft after he ran for 1,070 yards and eight touchdowns on 167 carries in his lone year at Arkansas.
Washington has generated 15 carries for 119 yards across his two preseason games thus far. The 6-foot-2, 228-pounder has also logged two catches for 18 yards while solidifying his status as the top option behind Jeanty.
Ashton Jeanty stats
Jeanty handled a big workload for the Raiders as a rookie after being selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Boise State product handled 266 carries and turned them into 975 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Jeanty also added 346 yards and five receiving touchdowns on 55 receptions.
While Jeanty racked up 1,321 scrimmage yards, he wasn’t all that efficient between the tackles, as his 3.7 yards per carry ranked 44th league-wide among 49 qualifiers. His struggles were thanks, in part, to an offensive line that only allowed him an average of 1.6 yards before contact per carry, which ranked third-worst in the NFL.
Ashton Jeanty injury history
Jeanty played in all 17 games of his rookie NFL season in 2025. He suffered a minor ankle injury in the Raiders’ Week 12 game against the Cleveland Browns, but he did not miss any time because of it.
He finished the season having played 77.64% of the Raiders’ offensive snaps while his 321 touches ranked sixth in the league.
Jeanty was also largely able to remain healthy across his three college seasons at Boise State. He only missed game action during his sophomore campaign in 2023, when a lower-body injury suffered against Wyoming caused him to miss two games.
Ashton Jeanty fantasy outlook
Before his injury, Jeanty was widely viewed as a late-first or early-second-round pick across fantasy football formats. He checked in as RB8 in USA TODAY Sports’ most recent running back rankings but will move down until more is known about the severity of his injury.
Currently, Jeanty checks in at RB19 in FantasyPros’ consensus rankings in wake of his injury. That would make him a Round 5 value in 12-team leagues. Anyone drafting before Jeanty’s injury status is revealed can feel free to take a mid-round chance on him, but it would behoove them to add Washington as a handcuff soon after selecting the talented, second-year back.
Speaking of Washington, his stock should skyrocket if Jeanty is out for a considerable stretch. Washington is already up to RB35 in FantasyPros’ consensus rankings, but he could move into the top 30 if Jeanty is ruled out long-term.
