Barred news outlets seek emergency hearing after White House continues to deny access

A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to respond in writing after journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were turned away Thursday from the White House grounds despite a court order requiring the administration to temporarily restore their access.

Journalists from the three outlets were denied access hours after U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly granted a 14-day temporary restraining order reinstating the outlets’ access while their legal challenge proceeds.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In issuing the temporary restraining order, Kelly wrote that President Donald Trump’s directive banning the three outlets was most likely unconstitutional. He wrote that the plaintiffs are likely to succeed in their lawsuit against the administration, at least on the grounds that their credentials were revoked last week without due process.

Trump, the judge wrote, did not dispute that the outlets “did not receive notice and an opportunity to be heard before their hard passes were revoked.”

“This is a strong ruling vindicating freedom of the press, due process and the rule of law. We greatly appreciate the court’s swift action,” the attorney representing the news outlets, Ted Boutrous, said in a statement.
