Bryce Young at the center of ‘heated scuffle’ at Panthers training camp: Report
Jack McKessy
Full-pads practices at training camp are a good way to get the competitive juices flowing. But sometimes, there’s too much juice.
According to multiple reports, a “heated scuffle” broke out at Carolina Panthers training camp on Aug. 10. The fight broke out after a live team period rep between the first-team offense and first-team defense, when Panthers safeties Lathan Ransom and Nick Scott reportedly laid a hard hit on running back Jonathon Brooks.
Carolina quarterback Bryce Young “started jawing” at the defense after the hit, which led to the scuffle that involved multiple offensive linemen and defensive back Mike Jackson.
After practice, Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters he was impressed with the way the team handled things after the scuffle. He specifically praised the additional physicality he saw in the reps following the fight, but he also said that it could be a learning experience for the defense.
“I talked to the defensive guys, like, ‘Don’t back off on that. Let’s just see where our wideouts, receivers, where they’re at in those situations. If they can’t see you, thud ’em up and hold ’em up. If they can see you, I want it to be like football other than just, we’re not going to the legs,'” Canales said after practice. “So some teachable moments on both sides, really.”
Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero echoed Canales’ sentiment, saying practice had to stay physical in the lead up to the regular season, but that defenders have to also know “we’ve gotta protect our team.”
Scott, whose hit on Brooks reportedly incited the incident, said he spoke with Young and Jackson after practice to make sure any hard feelings didn’t carry over.
“You’d rather have guys talking about, ‘Hey, was that too much?’ rather than, ‘We’ve gotta turn it up a notch,’ Scott said, per Person. “This is the least of our worries.”
