Champions League scores: Early Real Madrid goals down Inter 2-1, Man City cruise 2-0 over Porto

Real Madrid opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win over Inter on Tuesday, their two early goals providing a much-needed security blanket despite an uneven performance against the Italian champions.

Inter started the game with intensity but were also mistake-prone, affording Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde easy opportunities to score and going down 2-0 by the 22nd minute. Real Madrid picked up the tempo after the fact, but were outpossessed and outshot by Inter over the course of the game, the visitors' reward finally coming in the 77th minute when Carlos Augusto pulled one back. It was not enough to inspire a comeback, though, Inter failing to make their way out of the hole they dug themselves into early in the match.

City's win was a slow burn but not for a lack of trying, their efforts were eventually rewarded with an Erling Haaland brace at Porto. Haaland's second-half display was an antidote to Diogo Costa's first-half work, the Porto goalkeeper making several key saves before the break in the hopes of keeping City at bay.
