Sameen Chaudhry
Demi Lovato is officially heading back to Camp Rock.
The former Disney actress is reprising her role as Mitchie Torres in “Camp Rock 3,” nearly two decades after she first starred in the Disney Channel musical franchise alongside the Jonas Brothers.
Disney confirmed Lovato’s surprise cameo ahead of the movie premiere, which took place in Los Angeles Monday, Aug. 10. The cast reunited on the red carpet, with Lovato joining the JoBros at the premiere. The group posed together at the event, marking another nostalgic reunion for the former Disney Channel stars. Lovato had previously been announced as an executive producer alongside the Jonas Brothers on the third installment, but her return in front of the camera had been kept under wraps.
Lovato, 33, will reunite on screen with Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas, who are also returning to the their roles as Shane, Nate and Jason Gray, respectively, members of the fictional band Connect 3.
Lovato first played aspiring singer-songwriter Mitchie Torres in 2008’s “Camp Rock,” which followed her character as she attended a prestigious summer music camp and crossed paths with Connect 3 frontman Shane Gray, played by Joe Jonas. Lovato and the brothers returned for the 2010 sequel, “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.”
Lovato shared that her return to the role was “so nostalgic and so healing,” during an interview with Disney at the premiere.
“I had the best time. This film obviously means so much to me and ‘Camp Rock’ was the beginning of my journey in this industry,” the actress and singer said of her debut movie role.
Director Veronica Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter, “I needed to make a movie that simultaneously satisfied the new Camp Rockers and the nostalgia campers like myself who grew up with the franchise and know it and love it so much.”
The original “Camp Rock” became the second-most-watched Disney Channel Original Movie of all time when it premiered, according to Yahoo. It now ranks third, behind “High School Musical 2” and “Wizards of “Waverly Place: The Movie.”
