Fifth-grader and teacher drown during Iowa field trip

A fifth-grade student and a teacher drowned while on a field trip to a lake in Iowa, the Des Moines Register and the Iowa City Press-Citizen of the USA TODAY Network reported.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said it responded to the Coralville Reservoir at Lake Macbride State Park the afternoon of Sept. 22 for a report that people were in the water. Soon after, they recovered the body of an adult who was pronounced dead at the scene.

After a search that lasted through the evening and began again the next day, first responders recovered the body of a child from the water more than 24 hours after the initial report.

The victims were identified as Ahmed Osman, 10, and Hannah Jorgensen, 24. Ahmed and other fifth-graders from Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville, Iowa, were on a field trip with the University of Iowa's School of the Wild program at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area near Solon, which is between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Coralville Reservoir is connected to Lake Macbride by the Iowa River and a spillway.
