Nicholas Hoult is making the jump from the DC Universe to the Wizarding World.

Fresh off his role as Lex Luthor in “Superman,” the actor has joined the cast of HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV series. The official “Harry Potter” Instagram account confirmed the casting in a joint post with HBO. “Magical Me indeed,” the caption read. “Now, how many autographs would you like?”

Hoult, 36, is set to play Gilderoy Lockhart, who in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts. In the movie version, the role was played by Kenneth Branagh. Hoult won’t be appearing in the show until Season 2, as his character doesn’t come into play until the second book.

A second season of “Harry Potter” was confirmed in May, months before Season 1 is set to air in December.

Hoult is one of the biggest stars yet to sign on for “Harry Potter,” a new adaptation of the original J.K. Rowling novels. Rowling is on board as an executive producer. Her involvement has drawn backlash toward the project given the author’s history of controversial statements about the transgender community, and some stars of the series have denounced her views. Bel Powley, who is playing Petunia Dursley in the show, recently told The Telegraph that “I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender.”

Other big names in the cast include John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Hagrid. Lithgow told The New York Times he considered quitting the show over the controversy surrounding Rowling, adding that he has accepted that “every interview I will ever do for the rest of my life, this will come up.”

For the three central roles, the show went with a trio of largely unknown newcomers: Dominic McLaughlin is playing Harry Potter, while Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley.

Hoult was most recently seen on the big screen as the villain Lex Luthor in DC’s “Superman,” and he’s set to reprise the character in the 2027 sequel, “Man of Tomorrow.” The star is known for his roles in movies like “Nosferatu” and shows like “The Great.” The latter earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for best lead actor in a comedy series.

In terms of casting, the biggest unanswered question for “Harry Potter” is who will play the series’ overarching villain, Lord Voldemort. Ralph Fiennes, who played Voldemort in the movies, revealed his pick on “The Claudia Winkleman Show” earlier this year: “Tilda Swinton was mentioned somewhere as being a contender, and I think she would be amazing,” he said.
