‘Heartbroken.’ 2 Ole Miss students’ deaths under investigation

Authorities in Mississippi are investigating the deaths of two students at the University of Mississippi, according to Sept. 22 news releases from the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Department and school officials.

The Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Department said in a news release that law enforcement is investigating two separate deaths. The department has not confirmed the deaths are connected but said packaged kratom sold from a retail store was found in both investigations.

"We do not have confirmed information indicating that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death," the department said. "We ask the public to avoid speculation regarding the circumstances or cause of either death while these investigations remain ongoing."

It was not immediately clear when the individuals were found. USA TODAY reached out to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department for comment.

The coroner’s office confirmed the two individuals were University of Mississippi students, according to Dr. Shawnboda Mead, the university’s vice chancellor for student affairs.

"The University is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time," Mead wrote.
