Human remains identified as Texas State student Jason Landry

Human remains discovered earlier this month have been identified as those of Jason Landry, a 21-year-old Texas State University student who disappeared in 2020 after his vehicle was found crashed and abandoned along a rural road, officials announced on Sept. 23.

The identification was confirmed through DNA testing conducted by the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification, Attorney General Ken Paxton's office said in a news release. The skeletal remains were found on Sept. 8 by a resident in Caldwell County, located just southeast of Austin, Texas.

The remains did not reveal additional information about Landry's cause or manner of death, and investigators said they found no evidence of foul play, according to the attorney general's office.

Paxton's office said investigators with its Cold Case Unit spent years conducting repeated ground and aerial searches, pursuing new leads and reviewing evidence in the disappearance of Landry. Investigators worked with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Search and Rescue (TEXSAR), along with citizen volunteers.
