El Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas comenzó a despedir a algunos de los agentes incorporados durante su rápida expansión tras detectar antecedentes que debieron revisarse antes o problemas de desempeño, según una investigación de The Washington Post.

La revisión pone bajo escrutinio una campaña que sumó 12,000 agentes y oficiales en menos de un año para reforzar los arrestos y las deportaciones.

Investigaciones periodísticas y una denuncia interna señalan que algunos reclutas comenzaron a trabajar o entrenarse antes de terminar sus verificaciones.

Tres exfuncionarios del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional dijeron a The Washington Post que ICE ha separado a reclutas por señales de alerta en sus historiales o por desempeño deficiente. No se ha informado cuántos empleados han sido despedidos.

La contratación masiva buscaba duplicar la fuerza de ICE, de unos 10,000 a 22,000 oficiales. La agencia ofreció bonos de hasta $50,000 y recibió más de 220,000 solicitudes, una velocidad que dejó oficinas sin suficiente espacio y equipos para recibir al nuevo personal.
