As the Los Angeles Rams prepare for their first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Aug. 15, their biggest question mark remains the status of Aaron Donald and whether or not he will return for a potential run at the Super Bowl this season.

Momentum seems to be pointing in the direction of Donald, one of the greatest defensive linemen of all-time, suiting up for the Rams again after walking away from the game three years ago, but neither he nor head coach Sean McVay have yet to say anything definitive. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year worked out with the team last week and was spotted running through drills with Braden Fiske and Desjuan Johnson at the Rams’ practice facility on Sunday, Aug. 9. McVay told reporters on Thursday that Donald flew out his speed trainer from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that Donald could potentially make his decision towards the end of the week ahead of the Rams’ preseason opener. The team is set to hold a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

USA TODAY Sports will have live updates and the latest rumors on Aaron Donald and his pending decision to rejoin the L.A. Rams:

Why would Aaron Donald rejoin Rams?

James H. Williams

The Rams defense is already loaded with talent, and the potential return of Aaron Donald would only take it to another level.

The defense currently includes edge rusher Myles Garrett, defensive end Braden Fiske, defensive end Kobie Turner and cornerback Trent McDuffie.

Garrett was unanimously voted as the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year after setting a new NFL single-season sack record with 23. He was traded to Los Angeles by the Cleveland Browns.

Turner has proven to be a solid interior defensive lineman that produced at least seven sacks every season since 2023.

Fiske enters his third season with the Rams after being drafted out of Florida State. He’s known for his athleticism and high-motor play. He’s started 24 of 34 games he played in during his first two seasons. He also had 74 total tackles and 11.5 sacks.

The Rams acquired McDuffie as part of a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s started all 56 games he’s played in over the past four years. He’s produced 246 total tackles, 34 pass defensiveltions, eight forced fumbles, and three interceptions.

A video was posted on Sunday, Aug. 9, showing Aaron Donald working throughout drills alongside defensive lineman Braden Fiske and Desjuan Johnson at the Rams’ practice facility.

The video was shared by the 2Tenths Speed and Agility account on X.

Donald has worked closely with trainer DeWayne Brown of 2Tenths Speed and Agility throughout a majority of his career.

Rams coach Sean McVay mentioned that Donald had flown his speed trainer out to Los Angeles from Pittsburgh when speaking with reporters on Thursday.

Aaron Donald could make decision later in week

James H. Williams

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio is reporting that Aaron Donald could decide on his return to football at the end of this week.

Florio had initially reported on Thursday, August 6, that Donald was likely to decide at the beginning of the week.

Regardless of when Donald makes a decision this week, he will still have plenty of time to participate in preseason camp if he does commit to a return.

The Rams will hold a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 11. Los Angeles will have its first preseason game on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs on Aug. 15.
