Texas Tech might be in the market for an offseason addition at quarterback, after all.

According to a report from The Athletic, the Red Raiders are the “likely landing spot” for former Florida State starting quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who on Friday, Aug. 21 was granted a temporary injunction in Kentucky state court. The decision allowed him to enter the transfer portal and gain a fifth season of eligibility.

Castellanos has 38 career starts over the past four seasons, including at Central Florida in 2022; Boston College in 2023-24; and Florida State in 2025, which included a Week 1 upset over heavily favored Alabama. He has completed 477-of-816 passes over his career (58.5%) for 6,449 yards and 48 touchdowns to 28 interceptions, adding 459 rushing attempts for 1,984 yards (4.3 yards per attempt) and 24 touchdowns.

Should he transfer to Texas Tech, he is expected to play behind Will Hammond, who made two starts for the Red Raiders last season but is also coming off an ACL tear.

Tech’s reported interest in Castellanos comes after their first notable offseason addition, Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby, entered into treatment for gambling addiction. He was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after the organization determined he had gambled on his own sport and team, including when he was a freshman at Indiana.

Though a Texas judge granted a TRO to Sorsby allowing him to bypass the NCAA’s ruling, he ultimately left the Red Raiders to declare for the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft. The NFL declined to hold one for him, and he now awaits entry to the NFL via the 2027 NFL Draft.

The NCAA scored a court victory on Aug. 21 in federal court after United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit on Friday, Aug. 21 granted the organization’s request for a stay in the case of Brock Wisne, et. al, plaintiffs, vs. the NCAA. The ruling, for now, keeps its five-for-five eligibility rule in place, meaning members of the 2022 class cannot get a fifth year of eligibility.

That decision, however, does not affect state court decisions granting TROs to other athletes, such as Castellanos in Kentucky or, two days prior, in Jack Pyburn and several others in Louisiana.
