American views of China are becoming more positive, though they remain largely negative, according to two polls released this week ahead of the Trump-Xi summit.

On a “feeling thermometer” from 0 to 100, with 51 and up representing “warm,” Americans give China an average rating of 37, up from 28 in 2021, the Pew Research Center said yesterday after conducting a poll from Sept. 14 to 20. While “cold” views of 49 and below still predominate, the share of U.S. adults with a warm view of China has increased from 11% in 2021 to 19% today, while the share with a cold view has fallen from 68% to 54%, Pew said.

Younger Americans rate China more warmly than older ones do, with adults under 50 giving China an average rating of 42 on the feeling thermometer, compared with an average of 31 for older Americans.
