Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s widow is widow is remembering “The Cosby Show” alum on what would have been his 56th birthday.

In an Aug. 18 post on “The Resident” actor’s Instagram page, Tenisha Warner shared a picture of their 9-year-old daughter, MacKenzie Warner, celebrating her father’s birthday surrounded by dolls, plush toys and a “Happy Birthday” banner.

Tenisha Warner, who now runs the Instagram account, explained that the family had a tradition of celebrating Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s birthday together at home.

“He always said that was all he needed because it brought him the most joy to begin every new year of his life with us. The only other guests were our daughter’s dolls and stuffed animals. Every single one was lined up in the dining room to celebrate with him,” she wrote in the caption.

She added that they are “breaking as we try to learn how to be here without him” on his birthday.

“I’m not hiding how much this hurts,” Tenisha Warner continued. “My gift to him includes my pain, because pain this deep only exists where love ran that deep. So today I’m sharing this with you who loved him too, the gift he gave us: he loved us with his whole heart, in ways I will never know again.”

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who was best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” died at age 54 in an accidental drowning off the coast of Costa Rica on July 20, 2025.

The “Malcolm & Eddie” actor and Tenisha Warner met in 2015 and married in 2022; they welcomed MacKenzie in 2017.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner estate battle takes turn with deal over daughter’s inheritance

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother, Pamela Warner, has reached a proposed settlement with representatives for his 9-year-old daughter amid an ongoing dispute over the late actor’s estate.

The agreement would provide Warner’s daughter with the majority remainder of the Warner Family Trust and estate but remains subject to court approval, Pamela Warner’s attorneys said.

Under the Warner Family Trust established in 1996, 70% of the actor’s assets were left to Pamela Warner, 15% to his late father, Robert Warner Jr., and 15% to his half-sister Collage, according to a legal petition Tenisha filed on July 20. Tenisha said the trust was established before her late husband met her and completely excludes any adequate financial support toward her and their daughter, adding, “This was not Malcolm’s intent.”

“Malcolm had every intention to provide for our nine-year-old daughter and me,” she previously told USA TODAY in a statement on July 21. “He was close to finalizing a new estate plan to replace the stale plan created in 1996 when he was 26 years old, 20 years before we met and well before we gave birth to our beautiful daughter. Sadly, he was unable to do so before we lost him.”

A representative for Pamela Warner denied she attempted to withhold funds from her granddaughter in an Aug. 13 statement obtained by USA TODAY. She also said that settlement has since been reached in the legal battle.

Tenisha Warner’s attorneys did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

“On behalf of Pamela Warner, Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s mother and lifelong business manager, we share the following to address the recent saddening public statements by Tenisha Warner,” the statement began. “Pamela continues to grieve the sudden loss of her son, Malcolm. She remains focused on protecting his legacy and the well-being of his daughter and family.”

“Recent claims that Pamela sought to prevent her granddaughter from receiving financial support are untrue,” it continued. “Malcolm was thoughtful and deliberate in his estate planning to include all his loved ones. While the trust at issue is in favor of Pamela, his father, and his sister, Malcolm provided for his wife and daughter separate and apart from that trust to the tune of millions of dollars.”
