New information revealed following Hayden Panettiere’s death: Updates
More details continue to emerge following the death of actress Hayden Panettiere.
The former child star, who died Aug. 16 at age 36, was found unresponsive at Judson Mill Lofts, an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, local police told USA TODAY. A 911 call obtained by Reuters, TMZ and other outlets revealed the “Scream” franchise actress was in cardiac arrest after a possible overdose.
The Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the “Nashville” actress’ death as more tributes to the young star pour in.
Here’s what we know as the investigation is ongoing.
Hayden Panettiere’s mom statement: Family was ‘trying to get rid of’ boyfriend Brian Hickerson
Panettiere’s estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, indicated to NBC News over the phone on Aug. 18 that the actress’ family did not approve of her rekindled relationship with Brian Hickerson.
“This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death and that was Brian Hickerson,” Vogel told the outlet.
She added, “I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry – it is a struggle and it’s a very challenging industry, and it’s not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path.”
Vogel was her daughter’s manager from when she was a baby until Panettiere ended their working relationship at 19 – a decision that led to their strained relationship, the actress shared in her 2026 memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning.”
“The only reason why she would reach out was when something was needed. It wasn’t just to say ‘hi’ or ‘how are you,'” she said on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast in May. “It’s been a really tough road, and no matter how many times that door has been slammed in my face, I’ve desperately sought her approval for my entire life.”
Who called 911 for Hayden Panettiere?
According to a police report obtained by The Greenville News, part of the USA TODAY Network, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, called 911.
They were with her on the scene as emergency medical personnel “attempted to perform life saving methods for an extended amount of time.”
Hayden Panettiere’s ex, Brian Hickerson, was with her when she died
The officer reported first speaking with Zach Hickerson, who told the police officer that Panettiere “was his brother’s girlfriend.” He was “very emotional” as emergency medical personnel attempted to save Panettiere, while Brian “did not become emotional” until medics declared the actress dead, according to the officer’s report.
Brian Hickerson also showed police a “bag of medication” the actress was allegedly taking at the time. Other details in the report were redacted.
Panettiere and Hickerson had dated on-and-off since 2018, in a tumultuous relationship marked by years of alleged physical abuse and multiple arrests for domestic violence.
Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend and was sentenced to 45 days in jail, four years of probation and 52 domestic violence classes in 2021. In recent months, the pair fueled speculation that they had reconciled after being photographed together. And according to E! News, Panettiere and Hickerson reportedly traveled from Los Angeles to South Carolina together the day before Panettiere died.
Hayden Panettiere’s former fiancé vows to keep her memory alive with daughter Kaya
Panettiere’s ex-fiancé, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, has spoken out on her death, saying the actress “left this world far too soon.”
“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief,” Klitschko wrote in an Instagram post on Aug. 18, alongside a throwback photo of the three of them together, smiling at the beach. The pair were on-and-off for a decade, and got engaged in 2013. Panettiere gave birth to their daughter, Kaya, in 2014, but gave up custody to Klitschko in 2018, following her battle with postpartum depression and addiction. The 11-year-old now lives in Ukraine with Klitschko.
“Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter,” he added. “To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”
PETA shares Hayden Panettiere’s final video, filmed weeks before her death
Two weeks before her death, Panettiere “actor confined herself to a bathtub for a campaign protesting marine parks like SeaWorld,” and PETA shared the video on Aug. 18.
“Imagine spending your entire life in a bathtub. That’s what it’s like for dolphins and whales in tiny tanks at marine amusement parks,” Panettiere said while wearing a PETA T-shirt. “We can end this, you and me.”
She added, “Can you imagine their frustration, their trauma, their depression? All that’s important and crucial for their wellbeing is ripped away.”
“Today, in tribute to Panettiere’s life and legacy of compassion, PETA is sharing the ad and moving video encouraging everyone to honor her memory by refusing to buy a ticket to any facility that condemns these remarkable animals to a tiny concrete tank,” the nonprofit said in a statement.
Panettiere advocated for animal rights throughout her life. In 2008, she headed to Washington, D.C., to speak out against commercial whaling as a spokesperson for Save The Whales Again! The prior year, she donned a wetsuit and swam into a cove in protest of an annual dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan.
