Over 1 million attic stairway ladders sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other home improvement stores have been recalled due to potential falls and injuries, a Kentucky importer has announced.

Louisville Ladder, Inc. recalled the item, sold under the Louisville, Featherlite, Lite and Century brand names, in an alert on Thursday, Aug. 6. The company recalled 1,770,000 of the ladders.

According to Louisville Ladder, Inc., the aluminum or wood frame ladders with gas struts come with handrails and fold into the attic.

The bolts on the ladders could break, causing those using them be injured or fall to their deaths, Louisville Ladder, Inc. announced on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website. 

The attic stairway ladders were manufactured in Mexico and sold between November 2012 and July 2026 for between $170 and $600.

What are the exact ladders being recalled?

Louisville Ladder, Inc. stressed that the only recalled items are the ladders with struts.

The ladders were sold in multiple sizes to fit different size attic openings in home ceilings, including:

• Width –  22.5 inches, 25.5 inches and 30 inches wide
• Length – 54 inches and 60 inches
• Fits ceiling heights ranging from 7 feet, 8 inches to 12 feet

The company has recalled ladders sold under brand names Century, Featherlite, Lite and Louisville. 

Customers can find the brand name and model number on the inside of the attic door and a full list of recalled ladders at www.atticstairwayrecall.expertinquiry.com/product.

Where were the recalled ladders sold?

The ladders were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Do It Best, Orgill, Amazon and other retailers nationwide, the company said.

Were there any reports of injuries due to the recalled ladder?

According to the announcement, there have been 11 reports of a bolt breaking, including a report that someone injured their neck, head and back.

What should you if you have the recalled ladder?

The company said customers should stop using the ladders immediately. Customers must go to www.atticstairwayrecall.expertinquiry.com to get a free repair kit that includes two replacement ¼-inch spreader bolts, washers and lock nuts with installation instructions.

Customers will need the ladder’s model number, which is inside the attic door.
