Perez Hilton remains hospitalized under Florida’s Baker Act and is in serious but stable condition, his family said in a new update Aug. 8 on the celebrity blogger’s health.

Hilton, 48, experienced significant blood loss and sustained additional injuries that will require surgery in the coming days, according to the statement. His treatment and recovery will be a long process, his family said in statement posted to his website Aug. 8.

His communication has been “extremely limited” and confined to immediate family, medical providers and others directly involved in his care. Hilton has not communicated with the media or issued any public statements, his family said.

The update said Hilton was able to spend time with his mother and sister Friday. His family previously said he was “able to communicate” while receiving medical treatment, which had given them hope.

What happened to Perez Hilton?

Hilton was hospitalized after the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls Aug. 4 about a man livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media. The sheriff’s office told USA TODAY that Hilton was safely recovered and transported to a local hospital, where he received medical attention.

An unverified video circulated online appeared to show Hilton nude, covered in what appeared to be blood and exhibiting signs of distress while holding a sharp object.

The family has warned that false and inaccurate reports about Hilton and the circumstances surrounding the incident are circulating. It said the only statements about his condition that should be considered credible and authorized are those published directly on PerezHilton.com.

Family asks for privacy

Hilton’s family has asked the media and public to give them privacy while he receives treatment and they care for those affected by the incident.

The family previously said Hilton’s children, niece and sister were inside the home shortly before the livestream incident. His three children remain safe and are being cared for by immediate family, according to the latest statement.

Perez Hilton’s previous health issues

The hospitalization follows another serious health episode for Hilton earlier this year. In March, he spent several weeks hospitalized after developing an ulcer, perforation and sepsis. He underwent laparoscopic surgery.

Months later, Hilton returned to his Miami hometown with his mother and his three children, Mario Armando Lavandeira III, 13, Mia Alma, 11, and Mayte Amor, 8.

Hilton, whose birth name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., rose to fame through his celebrity gossip website, which launched in 2004 and became known for its coverage of Hollywood celebrities.
