Paris Saint-Germain defeated Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday, Aug. 12 in Salzburg, Austria, claiming the UEFA Super Cup trophy for the second year in a row.

With both teams playing semi-shorthanded following the World Cup, PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring 20 minutes in. But Aston Villa didn’t crumble and pushed hard for an equalizer, finally getting a goal from 17-year-old Brian Madjo on the stroke of halftime.

Then PSG’s depth – and status as the best club in Europe – showed itself with reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele coming on as a substitution to start the second half. In the 61st minute, Désiré Doué scored the go-ahead goal, initially ruled offside until the referees went to video review. 

Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa each begins their respective domestic seasons on Sunday, Aug. 23, though PSG plays Lens in the Trophée des Champions on Sunday, Aug. 16. Both clubs are also participating in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League – with PSG the back-to-back winner – that gets underway early in September.

PSG’s Désiré Doué scored in the 61st minute and the goal was initially ruled offside, but a review revealed that Doué was not offside and awarded PSG the go-ahead goal.

Ousmane Dembele in for PSG

Less than a month removed from the World Cup, PSG star Ousmane Dembele is coming on to start the second half, replacing Maghnes Akliouche.

The reigning Champions League winners also have Bradley Barcola and Fabian Ruiz on the bench today after both players lasted through the final weekend of the World Cup.

Aston Villa equalized on the brink of halftime with 17-year-old Brian Madjo finding the back of the net after a number of big chances in the first 45 minutes.

The Parisians have been pushing for a second goal after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s opener, but Villa is still looking dangerous on the counter-attack.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, last year’s Champions League player of the season, blasted a shot past Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot in the 20th minute, staking PSG to a 1-0 lead.

Why isn’t Dembele playing today?

Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele isn’t in PSG’s starting lineup for the Super Cup on Wednesday but was named as a substitute by manager Luis Enrique.

While Dembele isn’t starting the game less than a month after wrapping the World Cup, his France teammate Désiré Doué is in the lineup.
