Here it is, your moment of zen: “The Daily Show” is showing where it all began for some of its top talents.

Comedy Central’s Emmy-winning news satire is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, and in honor of the occasion, the show has dug into its archives to reveal the auditions of former and current correspondents, ranging from John Oliver to Samantha Bee.

In a nostalgic compilation video shared with USA TODAY, fans get a look at footage of 15 comedians auditioning for the show over the years, usually by performing a segment in the studio, sans live audience, with a casually dressed Jon Stewart or Trevor Noah.

Oliver’s audition is dated May 4, 2006, and features the future “Last Week Tonight” host making Stewart crack up with a segment about Dick Cheney’s accidental shooting of Harry Whittington during a hunting mishap that year. The tape begins with Stewart joking that Oliver wouldn’t be able to use his first name if he’s hired because the show already has one Jon. Oliver stayed on until 2013, even taking over “The Daily Show” as host on a temporary basis while Stewart was away shooting a movie.

Bee’s audition, from May 2003, sees the comedian deliver a report on SARS while pretending to be in Toronto and joking that she’s “bored” because the Canadian city is “surgically sterile” compared to New York City. Bee stayed on for more than a decade before landing her own show, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” on TBS.

Michael Che’s 2014 audition is also featured: A segment with the comedian serving as a senior investigative reporter impresses Stewart so much, the host remarks, “That’s very funny.” Che had a short-lived stint as a correspondent for “The Daily Show” in 2014 but left that same year and became co-anchor of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live.”

The compilation also includes the auditions of Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Jessica Williams, Rob Riggle, Ed Helms and other comedians who ultimately joined the show.

In a 2017 Q&A for the Kennedy Center, former “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. explained comedians who audition for the show are asked to perform, on tape, a script that has been written for them, as well as write one of their own. “If they like it, they call you in. You do the same thing live,” he said, adding that “they have you perform one that the writers wrote to make sure that you can bring their material to life.”

“The Daily Show” premiered on Comedy Central in July 1996 and was hosted by Craig Kilborn before Stewart took over in 1999. Under Stewart, the show began leaning more heavily into political satire, and it helped launch the careers of comedians like Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell.

Stewart left “The Daily Show” in 2015 and handed over the reins to Noah, only to return in 2024 after Noah stepped away from the desk. Stewart now hosts the show on Mondays, while other comedians take over for the rest of the week. In 2025, Stewart confirmed he would host at least through December 2026.
