Del Valle hit the express delivery option on Elkins’ retirement package. “The Damage” Elkins earned his nickname over 40-plus professional fights, often overcoming incredible hardship to win memorable fights. He wasn’t able to call upon that legendary heart against a nine-to-one betting favorite. Del Valle floored him with a powerful left hook. 

“I’m so happy that I was able to share the Octagon with him,” Del Valle said in his post-fight interview through a Portuguese interpreter. “He had a great career.”

Elkins’ body language didn’t look good on the way down. He responded to the adversity, but the referee had already rushed in to stop the fight. Despite the fight lasting only 35 seconds, Elkins held his head high.

“Gratitude. I didn’t know how this would end, but this is life…” Elkins told UFC commentator Daniel Cormier. “I can’t lose in life. I’m happy.”
