The field is set. After 34 regular-season events, 70 golfers are still alive at the start of the FEDEX Cup Playoffs, which open this week at the FEDEX St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tenn.

Scottie Scheffler leads it, which surprises nobody. Matt Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark and Chris Gotterup fill out the top five. Rory McIlroy sits 12th.

The bottom of the list is where the season actually got interesting.

The Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., is the last event before the postseason and it shaped the field for the playoffs. Michael Brennan bridied five straight on the front nine, then shot a 6-under 64 to beat Beau Hossler by three Sunday. He’s in at No. 47. Jackson Koivun closed with a 1-over-71 to hang on to the last, 70th spot.

Who missed the field tells you as much about the season as who made it.

Keegan Bradley bogeyed the final hole of his season, dropped out of the top 70 and ended a run of 15 straight playoff appearances without posting a top 10 all year. Hossler led after 18 holes, after 36 and again after 54, needed a win to have any path at all, and didn’t get in. Jason Day is No. 82. Brooks Koepka, in his first year back from LIV Golf, is 94th. Tony Finau is 98th.

Only the top 50 get past Memphis. The top 30 make the Tour Championship. Here’s the field of 70.
