If you’re looking to add items to coffee, a cornucopia of options exists to help the drink go down easier and add some flavor along the way. One of these key spices is the antioxidant-rich cinnamon.

But is the longtime seasoning actually safe to add to coffee? Here's what to know.

For most people, adding cinnamon to coffee is completely fine.

\n\n

Adding “a sprinkle in coffee is perfectly safe,” and a healthy way to add flavor, said Lauri Wright, the director of nutrition programs at the University of South Florida.

\n\n

“It may provide a few antioxidants and could offer a small benefit for blood sugar, but one of the biggest advantages is that it may help you cut back on sugar, flavored syrups or sweet creamers,” she said.

\n\n

Still, if you’re looking to control your blood sugar, adding cinnamon isn’t a substitute for healthy eating, exercise or medication, Wright said.

\n\n

She stressed that cinnamon is not a "magic ingredient."

\n\n

“If your coffee also comes with flavored creamers, sugar, whipped cream or sweet syrups, those ingredients will have a much bigger effect on your blood sugar than the cinnamon ever will,” Wright said.
