What was once a tight contest at the 2026 BMW Championship turned into a one-man show as Wyndham Clark stole the spotlight on Saturday at Bellerive Country Club. Expanding his one-stroke lead at the halfway point to a five after 54 holes, the U.S. Open champion stands at 17 under and looks as if he can do no wrong with 18 holes to play in the penultimate event of the 2026 season.
Opening his Moving Day with a double bogey, Clark put it in reverse only to drive forward the rest of the day. Clark signed for a third-round 65 — tied for the lowest round of the day — to command the fourth outright 54-hole lead of his PGA Tour career. Clark has converted three in a row with an advantage at this point, including his most recent victory at Shinnecock Hills in June.
In cruise control for the final 17 holes of his third round, Clark’s initial slip saw the lead slip through his hands to his playing partner Gary Woodland. Dropping to 10 under, he marched forward and played the remainder of his round in 7 under. Birdies on Nos. 4 and 7 saw him regain the strokes he lost on the par-4 1st before a big bird came flying onto his scorecard on the par-5 8th to kick off a run to remember.
The eagle took the lid off the hole as Clark caught fire with his putter in hand. He converted birdie bids from 30 feet on No. 10, 14 feet on No. 11, 12 feet on No. 13 and 11 feet on No. 14 to put one hand on the trophy. A big par save from 15 feet on No. 15 may go a long way in keeping it there. A bogey on his final hole put a damper on his day a bit, but he’ll still have plenty of breathing room to start on Sunday.
Another day awaits the two-time major champion as a leaderboard packed with the world’s best, including Chris Gotterup, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay stand behind him as he eyes the sixth victory of his career, the third of his year and a possible last minute case to claim Player of the Year honors in the process.
The leader
1. Wyndham Clark (-17)
A win on Sunday would put him alongside Matt Fitzpatrick and Gotterup for the most on the PGA Tour this season with Clark the only one to claim one of the major variety in 2026. He looked like that major championship winner on Saturday with the lowest round of the day and a whole boat load of putts made.
What was perhaps most impressive, however, was the way in which he responded to some early turbulence. Getting punched in the face and not backing down, Clark kept calm and kept moving forward.
Other contenders
T2. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay (-12)
T4. Chris Gotterup, Gary Woodland (-11)
McIlroy managed to hit only four fairways in his third round, but he scored efficiently despite his waywardness off the tee. The world No. 2 turned in 1 under before catching fire on the back nine with five birdies offset by a single bogey on his inward half. While he may not have his swing in the exact spot he would like, he still has a chance to chase down Clark, or at the very least garner some more momentum before a return to East Lake Golf Club next week.

Of those originally on the bubble, Woodland is the lone player projected to move inside the top 30. However, the three players who were just inside that mark are now all projected out thanks to big moves by not only Woodland, but also Patrick Cantlay and Sungjae Im for the second straight week, who is the projected bubble boy with 18 holes remaining.
2026 BMW Championship updated odds and picks
Odds via DraftKings Sportsbook
- Wyndham Clark (27/100)
- Rory McIlroy (8-1)
- Patrick Cantlay (23/2)
- Chris Gotterup (21-1)
- Gary Woodland (35-1)
Clark is likely going to win this golf tournament, but the off chance McIlroy finds magic and the fluidity in his game, why not take a stab for some rooting interest. He will need to find 10 fairways to set up the scoring clubs, but there is still a lot of golf left and Clark’s heater on the greens has to cool eventually, right?

Rory McIlroy signs for a 65, posts 12 under
That was a brilliant second nine from Rory McIlroy. He puts five birdies on the scorecard on that side, but it was a par on the last which may have been the most important as he goes fairway bunker to greenside bunker to bottom of the cup to put the finishing touches on a 65. At 12 under, McIlroy has the inside track to possibly jump in that final pairing with Clark tomorrow.

Another one for Wyndham Clark!
Another hole and another birdie for Wyndham Clark. The leader is 6 under in his last seven holes, on pace for the lowest round of the day and continues to extend his lead which now stands at seven! He has made 105 feet of putts with his most recent 10-foot conversion on the par-4 14th pushing his total to 18 under.

Wyndham Clark extends his lead
The advantage is now SIX for Wyndham Clark who stands at 17 under. Another hole and another birdie for our leader as he throws an 8 iron underneath the hole on the par-3 13th and cashes in from just around 15 feet. He is 6 under on the week on holes 14-18 so there is still scoring to be had for the U.S. Open champion. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy moves to 11 under and into a tie for second with Chris Gotterup. He will be looking to get into that final group with Clark tomorrow with a fast finish.

Wyndham Clark regains five-stroke lead with another birdie
That opening double bogey must seem like a lifetime ago for Wyndham Clark. He is now 4 under on his round and five strokes clear of Chris Gotterup who is trying to chase him down. Clark is 5 under in his last five holes with the latest par breaker coming on the short par-4 11th where he laid up short of the water, pitched his second below the hole and rolled in a beauty. The U.S. Open champion is running down hill and trying to run away from the field in the process.

Rory rolls into a share of second place
The Masters champion is making a march towards the top. A birdie on the par-3 13th thanks to a held up short iron lands a birdie for the world No. 2 to move him to 10 under for the tournament, now five strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark. McIlroy is piecing together a nice round of 3 under up to this point despite maybe not flying full flight to this point. Meanwhile, Gary Woodland cards a bogey on No. 10 meaning McIlroy is alongside the 2019 U.S. Open champion in second place.

Wyndham Clark back in control after eagle on par-5 8th
After an up-and-down start, Wyndham Clark is back in command of the tournament at 14 under, now three strokes clear of Gary Woodland. Since the opening double bogey, Clark is 4 under on his round as he has overcome some early left misses to steady the ship and seize the outright lead with margin.

Bellerive biting back a bit more today
In Round 1, Bellerive played 1.50 strokes under par. In Round 2, it played -1.86 strokes under par. So far on Saturday, the par 70 is playing to an average of 69.30, north of a stroke more difficult than Friday. This seems to be a combination of some tighter pin locations and the wind whipping a hair more than Friday and Saturday. The being said, the greens are still rather receptive and scoring is still possible from the fairway.

Wyndham Clark’s bogey-free streak ends on No. 1
Wyndham Clark did not make a bogey the first two days, so naturally he opens his third round with a double bogey to drop out of the lead. The U.S. Open champion is now one behind his playing partner, Gary Woodland, who started his third round with a ho-hum par. The lead is down to 11 under, which should give those players up ahead on the golf course an extra jolt of energy.

Scheffler turns at 5 under for tournament
That is back-to-back birdies and three in his last five holes for the world No. 1 as he climbs to 2 under for the day and 5 under for the championship. Scheffler has not gotten off to great starts so far this week as he played the front nine in +3 on Thursday and even par on Friday. Making his front-nine 33 even more impressive is that he hit just three fairways in the process and hit his tee shot on No. 2 in the water (where he saved par).
